2022 WINNER: Yingyi (Daisy) Wang, St Mark’s Anglican Community School

Joe Bontempo, Manager, International Education, Department of Education WA  presented the 2022 WA International School Student of the Year Award to Yingyi (Daisy) Wang from St Mark’s Anglican Community School

From the very beginning of her school journey at St Mark’s Anglican Community School Daisy immersed herself in the life of her School, becoming an integral part of the community.

She is described by her teachers as a vivacious, articulate, compassionate and extraordinary young woman who has a broad range of talents across the Arts, Sports and is academically gifted. She is always quick to put her hand up to be part of extracurricular programmes.

Daisy makes sure that she is there to welcome new international students. She provides support with access to curriculum, translating information that they don’t understand,

ensuring that they fit in socially and that all students are integrated into the School’s Community in a supportive and kind manner.

Covid restrictions caused many of our students to feel disconnected from their Community. As result, we made this a focus in the Senior School. Daisy helped me with an assembly recording where she spoke from the heart about Community and the importance of being made to feel welcome; she translated this to her experience at St. Mark’s and in Australia. Her speech has had a lasting impression on many of our students and was the inspiration for our ‘gratitude and kindness project’ in Year 9.

Her natural sense of social justice equates to her being able to advocate for minority groups with both words and actions. She has received several Academic Awards including whole subject awards. Daisy is on track to receive awards for Maths Methods and Endeavour.
