All CISWA activities are directed by a voluntary Executive Council consisting of current/retired staff from a variety of WA Education Providers. The Executive Council meets on a monthly basis.

President: Dr Kevin McKenna, former DVC International, Curtin University

Kevin has had extensive experience in the international education sector with over 30 years at Curtin University. He had various roles in Curtin Business School until in June 2000 he was appointed as the founding Pro Vice-Chancellor at Curtin University of Technology’s Malaysian Campus in Miri, Sarawak.

From 2004 to 2009 he had overall responsibility for all of Curtin’s international operations, as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International. In 2008 he was responsible for the establishment of Curtin’s Singapore campus. He is now retired and is currently the President of CISWA.

Vice-President: Simon Davies Burrows, Manager Internationalisation, Edith Cowan University

Simon has worked in education in Australia and overseas for 16 years. For the past 10 years he has been employed in international education at Edith Cowan University in Perth [ECU].

Simon has overseen a variety of areas at ECU including international admissions, compliance & quality assurance, student mobility and International relations and academic partnerships. He was founding Chair of the WA Universities ESOS Reference Group. In 2011, in recognition of his contributions to international education, Simon was awarded the inaugural Australian Universities International Directors Forum ‘Tracey McCabe Fellowship’. In 2012, Simon received the Vice-Chancellor’s staff award for his sustained contributions to internationalisation at ECU. Simon has contributed to industry discussion and delivered presentations and workshops on compliance and international admissions to industry colleagues across all sectors. He is the current Vice President of the Council for International Students of Western Australia.

2nd Vice-President: Celia Cornwell, Dean International, College of Arts, Business, Law and Social Sciences, Murdoch University

Celia Cornwell took up her role as Dean International for the Faculty of Health Sciences in July 2010, having previously worked at Curtin and in universities in the UK.   Celia has 20 years of experience in international relations in business, government and higher education, and is a fluent speaker of Standard (Mandarin) Chinese.

Celia has extensive experience in the development of international opportunities and partnerships for the private, government and university sectors.

In her current role Celia provides strategic leadership for the international activities of the Faculty of Health Sciences. She manages international student recruitment and seeks out and develops teaching and research collaboration with international partner universities. Celia also leads and manages the development of transnational programs at other campuses and with independent education partners.

In a previous career in State Government she had responsibility for management of intergovernmental relations and bilateral investment promotion with China and other countries in the region.

CISWA Executive Officer: Veronika Fitzgerald

Veronika Fitzgerald was born in Slovakia and moved to Australia in 2010. She has worked in international education since 2012. In her past role, she worked as Marketing and Recruitment Manager at Curtin College with focus on the China market and the Australian onshore market.  Veronika has brought to CISWA a wealth of marketing,  communication and client relationship management experience. Having studied in China for 2 years and having completed a Master’s degree in Chinese Language and Intercultural Communication, Veronika speaks fluent Mandarin and enjoys working in international education. Veronika has strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to deal with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Executive Councillor: Amanda Fritz, Director International Programs, Anglican Schools Commission International

Amanda has 20 years’ experience in international education.  Prior to her current role, Amanda held positions as the National Manager and WA State Manager for Allianz Global Assistance in Overseas Student Health Cover and six years in homestay management with the Australian Homestay Network (AHN).

Amanda also worked as part of the global Partnered Allianz Global Education (PAGE) team with Allianz Global Assistance in 2015, which helped to promote quality services to International students and promote Australia as a destination of choice for student mobility.  

In 2016, Amanda took a position managing the International Programs for the Anglican Schools Commission (ASC), which represents 14 independent co-educational secondary schools across Australia.  Most recently, Amanda’s role with the ASC expanded to also take on managing the ASC Language School, which focuses on delivering English Language Teaching courses and programs for primary and secondary students to prepare them for entry into mainstream schools.

Executive Councillor: Carol-Ann Lynch LLB, Principal RMA at EasiVisa and WA Branch Executive – Migration Institute of Australia

Carol-Ann was as a partner in a multi award-winning UK law firm before migrating to Australia with her family. She studied Australian Immigration Law at Victoria Law School, Melbourne and established a migration consulting firm back in 2003. EasiVisa provides migration advice and assistance to individuals and businesses engaged in both the public and private sectors, including education, healthcare, IT, energy and mining.

Carol-Ann has been actively involved, as an Executive Member, on various committees, including the Law Society (UK); Hospital League of Friends (UK); the Migration Institute of Australia WA and CISWA. She has huge respect for the skilful, experienced, dedicated professionals who comprise the backbone of our international education sector, particularly during these extraordinarily challenging times.  

Executive Councillor: Phil Payne, Executive Director, StudyPerth

Phil Payne joined StudyPerth as the Executive Director. in September 2017. Prior to StudyPerth, Phil was Director of External Engagement at Murdoch University, managing a team of over 50 staff, responsible for the recruitment and admission of students, both international and domestic. Phil’s preceding role was Vice President of Educational Partnerships, responsible for transnational partnerships in Singapore, Malaysia and Dubai and the development and management of pathways and partnerships. Phil was the inaugural Chair of Murdoch Singapore, a subsidiary of Murdoch University and remained a Director of the Board until 2017.

Phil’s previous roles at Murdoch included Pro Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and the Peel Campus and Chief Executive Officer of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Before joining Murdoch, Phil’s background was in healthcare, as Hospital Director of Lady Davidson Private Hospital in New South Wales.

Executive Councillor: Narelle Palmer- Manager – Student Orientation, Support and Engagement Student Experience, Central Service Delivery Centre, University of Western Australia

Narelle has worked at the University of Western Australia for the past 15 years. In her current role as Manager, Transition Services she oversees a comprehensive program of transition and orientation activities for undergraduate and postgraduate university students. Her key responsibilities include managing a transition team to plan, develop and deliver campus wide activities and events to support new students commencing their university studies and the management of a peer to peer international and domestic student mentoring program for over 600 mentors and 3000 student mentees.

Narelle is passionate about supporting international students and actively provides engagement opportunities through a number of initiatives delivered across the university. Narelle and her team were the recipients of the CISWA Provider of the Year Award in 2016 for their ConnectMe@UWA Program supporting commencing international students through peer support during their key transition to Perth and university study.

Executive Councillor: Julie Craig, Manager, International Sponsored Student Unit (ISSU), Curtin International, Curtin University

Julie has worked for over twenty years with international students in the Tertiary sector, working in a variety of roles at Kings College in London, Macquarie University in Sydney and Curtin University.  Julie has been responsible for contract management, international relations, events, managing staff and student pastoral support.

In her current role, she ensures international sponsors together with their students receive a high level of support from the University and manages the Curtin contract with the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) for Australia Awards Scholarship (AAS) recipients.

In 2015, Julie (& team) received the Curtin Excellence and Innovation Award: for programs that enhance student learning under the category of “services supporting student learning” (DVC-Academic, Curtin University).

In 2007, Julie received the Most Outstanding International Student Services & Support Staff Award (Perth Education City & the Government of Western Australia).

Executive Councillor: Tony de Gruchy, Former Director of the International Office at Canning College

Tony worked in the international education sector from 1986 until retirement in mid-2019. His roles included lecturer, student advisor, manager and director. He worked at Tuart College until 2002 when he transferred to Canning College.

During his time at the colleges, Tony was also active in professional and industry organisations including CISWA (President, Working Party Chair and professional development presenter), International Student Advisor Network of Australasia, International Education Association of Australia – board member, Perth Education City – board member and chair of the Africa market group.

Tony has always been interested in enhancing the international student experience and ensuring student welfare is maximised. He introduced many activities/services to assist international in pursuing everyday living and educational goals.

His work has been recognised by CISWA – 2018 Runner-up to the 2018 Outstanding Individual in International Education Winner and the recipient of that award in 2019.

Tony has continued to support the international education sector by joining the CISWA Executive in December 2019.

Executive Councillor: Ahmed Ademoglu, President,  Council of International Students Australia

Originally from Turkey, Ahmed is studying Nursing at Curtin University. He came to Australia in 2011 and during his study period, he became a student leader at Curtin college. His leadership skills and passion were inescapable.

In 2016, Ahmed was unanimously elected as the President of International Students Committee in Curtin Universit. In 2017, he was elected as the National Vice-President of CISA (Council of International Students Australia). 

Ahmed was the Conference Convenor for CISA 2018 Conference and the project leader for the CISA Business Sustainability Project. After successful completion of the projects and end of his term, Ahmed helped as Advisor to the new CISA Team. He was appointed as the Chair of Board of International Students Western Australia. He was also appointed as a Board member to the StudyPerth Board in June 2019. Ahmed is the current elected National President of Council of International Students Australia.
